Exploring the space between endings and beginnings

Melbourne-based band Lamassu combines influences from hard rock, doom, grunge and metal to create music that is heavy, atmospheric and deeply melodic.

For the band's debut album, Into the Empty, released in September 2019, I was commissioned to develop the album artwork, with the challenge of creating a visual identity that captured the music's dark atmosphere and underlying themes.

Working closely with the songwriters, I drew on esoteric symbolism and the changing phases of the moon, using a total lunar eclipse as a metaphor for endings, new beginnings and transformation.

The resulting artwork features a blood-red lunar eclipse against a dark, atmospheric backdrop, evoking a sense of emotional intensity, uncertainty and impending destruction. The imagery reflects the album's lyrical themes while creating a distinctive visual identity for the release.

The project marked the beginning of an ongoing creative collaboration with Lamassu, extending into subsequent releases, merchandise and promotional materials.
